The Baseline Pitch Arsenal Assessment lays the foundation for how we evaluate an athlete’s arsenal.

During the Baseline Pitch Arsenal Assessment, we give the athlete autonomy to throw what they want... when they want... while we collect...

​

  • 3-5 readings per pitch type

  • Video of ball release

  • Video/pics of grips

​

We cap Baseline Pitch Arsenal Assessments at 25 pitches.

​

We use advanced pitch tracking technology (Rapsodo PITCHING 2.0) to objectively measure the current state of each pitch. The pitch tracking data is combined with visual information from a high-speed video camera (Rapsodo INSIGHT) in order to pair “Real with Feel”.

 

This helps the athlete associate what they’re feeling with what’s actually happening.

After the athlete completes the Baseline Pitch Arsenal Assessments, we review…

​

  • Velocity

  • Spin Rate

  • Spin Direction

  • Spin Efficiency

  • Release Angle & Height

  • Vertical & Horizontal Break

  • Pitch Movement Profile

With all the cool things technology tells us… Velocity is still one of the strongest predictors of pitch quality. For example… We may spend more time working on increasing fastball spin efficiency with a high velocity pitcher than we would with an average to low velocity pitcher. Velocity also influences secondary pitch recommendations.

​

Beyond velocity, Spin Rate is the most important advanced metric when it comes to Pitch Design. Spin Rate represents how much room exists for potential adjustments by changing the axis of rotation.

​

Spin Rate is just one component of ball flight that determines pitch movement, so… Understanding Spin Direction and Spin Efficiency is necessary to understand how much a pitch moves in its current state.

​

Pitch Movement provides us with a catch-all for the information we’ve evaluated and paints a big picture of where the athlete’s currently at with a given pitch type vs where we think they should be.

​

After the Baseline Pitch Arsenal Assessment is complete, we'll examine the athlete’s session and develop an action plan to help improve the effectiveness of the athlete’s arsenal.

​

There’s typically a risk/reward consideration when redesigning pitches.

​

For example… If an athlete has a mediocre changeup that they don't throw often, and when they do, they lack confidence in the pitch… we may start redesigning it right way.

​

On the other hand… If an athlete has a plus slider that they lean on heavily, and they're very confident throwing it... we may not redesign it right away… or at all.

​

The athlete must be ready for high-intent throwing prior to the Baseline Pitch Arsenal Assessment.

RapScore

 

We also provide a RapScore Report.

​

RapScore is a player evaluation metric that combines individual pitch scores with overall arsenal effectiveness.

​

RapScore uses core data produced by Rapsodo PITCHING 2.0 to add more objectivity to the traditional MLB 20/80 player grading scale. Rapsodo created RapScore in tandem with MLB to enhance the 20/80 grading scale.

​

RapScore Reports show the athlete’s strengths, weaknesses, and allow us to create an individualized objective-based Pitch Arsenal Development Program.

​

RapScore Reports also serve as a great tool for athletes to use when marketing themselves to scouts/teams.

​

MOVEMENT MATRIX

Movement averages per pitch type.... how much movement spread between pitches that the athlete creates. The larger the movement spread the better… considering the athlete is effectively tunneling pitches.

RELEASE MATRIX

The spread of release (location) averages by pitch type. The goal is to minimize spread size. This objectively measures Pitch Tunneling.

VELOCITY MATRIX

Velocity displacement between pitch types, using the athlete's fastball as the baseline.

LOCATION MATRIX

The ability to consistently locate strikes around the corners/perimeter of the plate… based on intended location (scripted bullpen). This gives objective data on the concept of command.
